I started singing since I was young. My mom is from a musical family and loves to play guitar and sing at home. She told me that when I was 2 years old, I was already standing in front of the TV and singing.
I guess that’s where it all started. With my mom supporting me in what I wanted to do. She was there cheering for me when I sang in all the school competitions. I’ve never won :-D. But I’ve always enjoyed people watching me sing.
I really wanted to perform for a real audience. Because the feeling is so much different from competitions. I was adamant about it. In the end, my father came up with an idea – he owned a news-stand at the train station selling CDs. He was there every day and saw street musicians perform just in front of it. He said: “Why don’t you join them? I will introduce you.” So I went.
After the introduction and singing a couple of songs, a street audition of sorts, they took me in. And we started playing from train station to train station. Even performing on the train itself. The band was basically Indonesian gypsies who only played Gypsy Kings. We had a guitar, a violin, a double bass, an accordion and drums. These people never saw a single music chart in their lives. Yet, when they started to play, the magic unfolded.
I guess that’s where my music journey started. I’ve never cared how people look at me. I just love to sing.
I believe that passion, hope and perseverance is the key to everything. In my case, it eventually led me to sing first at shopping malls. Then by chance, I landed my first regular hotel gig at Crown Plaza.
I was working two jobs at that time – pre-school teacher by day, singer by night. I’ve commuted 3 hours every day. But I just didn’t care. I love singing, and I also wanted to help my two sisters with their education.
It was at this point that I started to feel stuck in my career. Without having traditional music education, I felt like an outsider, and my access to the exciting gigs was very limited. It just felt like I hit the ceiling.
Then I realized why I love jazz. The origin of jazz is blues. Blues come from Black American slaves who worked on plantations. But even though their bodies were chained, their souls were free when they sang the blues.
In my case, I felt chained by the expectations of society. That I need a specific background to make my dreams come true.
On the contrary, jazz is freedom without any limitations or boundaries. Everything is possible in jazz. That’s why I subconsciously chose it – a power to believe anything is possible. If I just try hard enough.
My desire to touch people’s hearts and spread love through my music eventually led me to Cambodia. Being my usual self, I went door to door asking venue owners if they needed a singer. Rejection after rejection led to gig after gig.
It was during this part of my life that I met many of you, and I’m very grateful to have you all in my life.
I wanted to share one personal thing with you. Throughout all my musical life, I have had one dream that is yet unfulfilled. I always wanted to have my own jazz album. Where I could share my joy with you through my music every day.
Will you help me make my dream come true?
